When you cannot seem to control your marijuana use even though you know it has started affecting your health, relationships, and other aspects of life, it means you have a marijuana addiction. Many people start it as a recreational activity but they soon become too dependent on it. The worst thing about marijuana use is that it can make you try other more addictive and dangerous drugs, and that is the reason why it is called a “gateway” drug.

Research has shown that marijuana can be very addictive and cause dependency on its own. Once you have become addicted to it, you will find extremely difficult to quit it because it leads to serious withdrawal effects. However, it is important to understand that you need to think seriously of breaking your marijuana addiction because it can affect your interpersonal relationships, lead to a decline in your achievements at school or work, and cause many other problems as well. It is worth mentioning that you should educate yourself about different symptoms of marijuana addiction because it helps you determine that you or someone you know is indeed addicted to this drug.

In case your teenager is not as active as they were before, this could be a sign of addiction. You may notice that they are not doing well at school and do not want to be around you or other family members. You may also notice their health deteriorating quickly. If you suspect anything, you may want to keep a close eye on them and even ask them to be at home for a few days. This will keep them from using marijuana, which in turn may cause some withdrawal symptoms. Some of the most common withdrawal symptoms are cravings, decreased appetite, difficult sleeping, mood changes, irritability, and other forms of physical discomfort.

It is important to identify and treat marijuana addiction because it can cause serious problems. For instance, studies show that teenagers who abuse marijuana develop IQ problems later in life. A longitudinal study has also found that people who abuse marijuana are four times more likely to develop depression as compared to those who do not use it.

When you know that your loved one is abusing marijuana, you should do your best to help them break the curse. Keep in mind that it is never easy to make an addict understand the importance of quitting and seeking treatment. They will be in a state of denial and this will make things extremely difficult for you. However, you should ignore the issue; instead, you should talk to the person in a nonjudgmental and supportive way. Share your concern with them and tell them why it makes sense to go to a rehab to overcome their marijuana addiction.

The fact of the matter is that marijuana use can lead to addiction and even make you try other drugs as well. It is therefore important to understand why you need help. You should also be very careful when dealing with a loved one who is battling with marijuana addiction. Be there for them and help them find a way to overcome their addiction.
